In life, we frequently use taste and food imagery in relation to emotions – love is sweet, regret bitter; anger burns, frustration boils over. With this in mind, I offer

Character is slow-cooked.

Like the most tasty meat that is carefully wrapped up and exposed to long, steady heat, to let all the fat melt and the flavours mingle, paying attention to make sure it doesn’t get burnt, or run out of liquid, seasoning as appropriate.

There are many thing we cannot control in our lives, but we can control how we attend to our own characters. Will we allow the heat to burn us, or will we find a way to make it help us become better people instead?
